Family in Drought
For almost a decade now rural New South Wales (NSW, Australia) has been in the grip of drought. Despite a surge of devastating flood waters through parts of western and central western NSW, since Christmas, drought affected land in NSW rose a further 1.1 per cent, to 81.1 per cent at the start of 2010. Brendan Allen is a farmer, a husband and a father to a young family living in rural NSW, just west of Bathurst. Due to climate change, there has been minimal rainfall, which has lead to poor crop growth which then leads to limited food supply for his sheep and cattle. Brendan's wife works part time for the Rural Fire Service to help support the family. She is also a full time mum to their 3 year old son Anthony. Brendan also works as a bull fighter and a fence repairer in order to support his family. The last year has been difficult for the family as they save money to relocate their farm. Choice of land is becoming harder as the drought affected area in NSW is expanding.
