Korea, divided by the 38th parallel
The Korean War is often referred to in the west as The Forgotten War. A peace-treaty has never been signed and the temporary agreement from 1953 is still effective. A Pentagon estimate from 1993 states that if war was to break out again on the Korean peninsula, one million people would loose their lives within 24 hours. In the case of war, the United States will assist South Korea together with 690 000 soldiers and half their airforce and navy. North Korea has an active force of around 1 000 000, of which 70% are located within 140 km of the 38th parallel. Following North Korea's nuclear test 9th October 2006 the relations between the two countries reached a new all-time low. © FREDRIK HARENSTAM / IN VISION IMAGES
