Kosovo, New Born
Four months after a unilateral declaration of independence, underwritten by the United States and European Union, the youngest country in the world Kosovo is still struggling to form its identity and become truly self-sufficient. The challenges of post-conflict nation-building are plain for all to see and the continuing ethnic divides, which flare into heated political battles on both regional and superpower levels, are superseded by the specter of the economic situation.
American photographer Matt Lutton, who previously documented the pre-independence state of affairs of Kosovo in 2007, revisited the young nation in June 2008 and found a country little changed but for attitude and name. Albanians are certainly proud of their successes and developments, but they're also becoming increasingly aware of the responsibilities and challenges of statehood. Thus the popular phrase “New Born”, spreading around the nation on shops and merchandise, seen first in a giant sculpture in a main square in the capitol of Prishtina, holds a number of meanings. While it underscores the pride of finally succeeding and becoming the youngest nation it also calls to attention the need for further international supervision of a young nation, which hasn't yet grow into maturity. Kosovo four months later is developing and working through its deep structural issues, but it has many more years to go until it functions on its own. © MATT LUTTON
